Biography

  • Assistant Professor in Public International Law, and Head of the Cultural Relations, International Office, Erbil Polytechnic University. Yassen received a PhD in International Refugee Law at Newcastle University, an LLM with Merit in Public International Law from the University of Leicester, a postgraduate diploma in International Law from the University of Nottingham, and an LL.B with Honours from the University of Derby.
  • Yassen is an external legal expert in the field of international protection for the European Asylum Support Office (EASO),
  • Guest Researcher at the Faculty of Law, University of Oslo and Independent Monitoring Officer at SEEFAR/ the Migrant Project.
  • Yassen has published several papers in the field of forced migration, refugees, and minority rights, and also participated in national and international conferences, workshops and seminars.
  • After completing BA, Diploma, Masters and PhD in different universities in United Kingdom, I returned to Kurdistan Region of Iraq in 2016. Since then, I have been working at Erbil Polytechnic University where I have taught several modules including Labour Law and Social Affairs, Public Relations, Company Law, Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, Research Methods, Public International Law, United Nation Law, Legal Terminology, Human Rights law, International Commercial Law.
  • Apart from teaching, I have also worked part time for organizations such as EASO to develop resettlement for third countries curriculum. Since 2018, I am independent monitoring Evaluator for Migrant Project in the KRI.
  • As an consultant and legal expert, I have developed a number of policy reports for Global Citizenship Observatory, European University Institute and UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning. 
  • I have established great network with several institutes from UK, Italy, Norway, and Finland to develop academic and research collaboration. 
  • My purpose in life is fulfil my potential and put smile on people's face. I describe myself as punctual, friendly, loves to take new challenges and shares knowledge, family man and optimistic.
